Dry and Cool with Another Cold Snap on the Way – Weekend Forecast for South MS/LA/AL 1/28/26

It’s going to be a dry week ahead as a large high pressure system morphs around us and another one is soon to come. Overall cooler temperatures will prevail, but we’ll soon have some very cold weather ahead by this weekend, so get your pipes wrapped and covered again as the bitter cold is back again!

Today

We started off this morning just around the freezing point, but we can expect sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s. Northwest winds around 5-10mph. Tonight, expect temperatures to fall into the mid to upper 20s.

Tomorrow

As the next front approaches, expect some calm conditions and partly cloudy skies during the day. Clouds will increase towards the evening. Highs in the mid to upper 50s and a low in the low to mid 30s.

Friday

This will be a fairly dry cold front moving in on Friday, but it will bring in some significant temperature changes. Behind it is a large influx of cold air from Canada in both the lower and upper levels. We’ll likely see the temperature drop pretty fast before the sun goes down with some gusty winds. Highs in the mid 50s and a low in the low 20s.

This Weekend

The NWS in Jackson has already highlighted a dangerous cold outlook for this weekend. Many of us south of I-20 will have highs just above the freezing mark while many above will stay below freezing. It’s going to be very cold, so make sure everything is wrapped, faucets are dripping and pets and plants are taken care of. Wind chills will be in the 10s day and night, so it’s going to be dangerously cold for anyone not bundled up. Highs will just barely make it into the 40s for some of us on Sunday.

Good News for Next Week

The good news is this won’t last forever! You can see the pattern of colder temperatures moving east looking at the maps above. We’ll have to endure the colder temperatures and no rain for the weekend, but things will turn around by next week with more average to even warmer temperatures coming up. Rain is possible by mid-week next week, so we can reduce the drought a bit.

  1. Drought … what drought??????? I live in south MS and we could EASILY go half-way into February without a drop of rain and never miss it. Perhaps it’s a drought where YOU are, but not here.

  2. Thanks, Noah. I’ll take the heads-up. It helps me deal with Osteoarthritis at 55! LOL! Ps: Any relation to Dr. Bert (Albert Gower) of Southern Miss Music school? He was one of my advisors back in the day.

    1. I’m not sure if I was related to him, but I was related to Dr. William (Bill) Gower who also taught music at USM!
