Summer Heat, Afternoon Storms, Business as Usual – Weekend Forecast for South MS/LA/AL 7/9/25

We’re barreling through July right now and we’re almost to that dog days of summer, but thankfully, there’s still a bit of rain in the afternoons. The trend will continue on throughout the week, but rain chances may wane a bit as a larger high pressure system builds cutting off any meaningful fronts that would bring us any major relief.

Surface analysis for Saturday from the Weather Prediction Center

A high pressure system in the Gulf will hover around us like a video game boss battle, just taunting us. Unfortunately, it has an almost impenetrable shield around it, so we won’t see more than diurnal afternoon thunderstorms for heat relief. Highs will slowly move from the low 90s to upper 90s by the weekend and lows will stay around the low to mid 70s. Heat indices will reach the upper 90s to low 100s by week’s end and the mid 100s by the weekend.

As the high moves further east into the Gulf tomorrow and Friday, we’ll see some return flow allowing for afternoon thunderstorms. Friday will have a slightly higher chance for rain as a weakening front will allow for some westerly winds in the upper atmosphere to clash with Gulf moisture increasing dew points. Some showers and thunderstorms may be possible in the morning and into the afternoon with some strong storms possible.

The weekend looks to be a very hot one as dewpoints increase to the mid 70s. With another developing high over the Deep South and one already in the Gulf, this means that we’re going to have more heat stress ahead. Heat indices over the mid 100s are possible and rain chances are going to be more limited due to the strong high. I can’t stress this enough, find somewhere cool to hang out and stay hydrated because this heat is no joke!
