1/23/26 Wintry & Severe weather County-by-County Breakdown for this weekend for Southern MS/AL/LA

This is going to take a while to sift through if you are trying to get a feel for how things will shake out for multiple counties. But if you just want to find a single county, just swipe on down to the county of interest!

Don’t know which county you live in? Here is a map of all of the local counties and parishes! And chaded are the ones discussed in this breakdown.

When you break that map into the “expected impactful weather type” you get the two maps below. Where we have highlighted in Orange the counties that expect to see wintry weather impacts from falling wintry precipitation and the other map where Red is shaded in to indicate a risk for severe weather.

Now, I want to make something super clear here: These maps are not absolute. Given the wiggling I think we may see from the model guidance and the sharpness of the line between the “have’s and have not’s” there is a good chance these colors may change.

A good example of this is the NQLBOT temperature gradient for Sunday morning:

If this gradient shifts 30 miles north, suddenly a few counties showing “ice” as a problem get roped into “severe” as a problem. And if it goes south, the opposite — folks preparing for a “severe” problem end up in an “ice” problem.

And that is 30 miles of north-south wiggling… across a 60-mile stretch of a boundary… that is more than 500 miles long….. and is in motion at about 30 miles per hour…. that we are trying to predict 48 hours into the future.

You can see where a small error in calculation can balloon into a big error in impacts.

But given all of that, I put together a breakdown of the timeline of events, county-by-county, in six-hour chunks,. Along with potential NWS alerts and actions and local impacts. This is a very, very long document. At last check it was about 10,000 words. So hopefully it covers everything.

And, if for some reason, I missed a county from the map above, please let me know. I had to put this together in chunks today, instead of in one sitting. So, there is a chance that, when picking up where I left off, I put the same county in twice or missed one. Not on purpose, just because this thing takes a long time to do.

During previous events, some folks have asked if there is a way to ‘help’ or ‘say thanks’ for all of the forecasting work I do. For the longest time I said, ‘Nah! I do this to be helpful!’

I was convinced by folks, though, that others want to ‘help’ like I do – just differently.

And their way of helping, or simply saying ‘thank you’ is with a donation to the blog to help keep it running – or to help keep me running.

So I’ve added this link. If you are one of those people willing to help us out, let me say ‘thank you’ to YOU.
