Freeze Ahead, Then Temperatures Picking Back Up – Week Ahead Forecast for South MS/LA/AL 3/16/26

After the cold front has passed, we’ll be left with some cold temperatures today and tomorrow! It’s likely that this is the final freeze before we go into full Spring. After tomorrow, temperatures will gradually warm up back to the 80s, but we’ll have more dry conditions compared to last week. Also, no rain for a little while!

Today

Yep, we’re starting off cool this morning! Not only that, a chance of some mixed wintry precipitation is possible by mid-morning across eastern Mississippi. It won’t last long, but we might notice a little bit of sleet falling before the clouds move out. Otherwise, it’s going to be cool and windy all day. We’ll have a high in the low 50s and a low in the low 30s tonight. The National Weather Service has already placed a Freeze Warning for tonight, so keep your plants covered and bring your pets inside.

Tomorrow

We’re starting off cold tomorrow, but thankfully the wind will subside. It’ll be a pleasant day after we hit the freezing mark with temperatures in the mid 50s and few clouds in the sky. It’ll be another cold one with our low reaching the low to mid 30s.

Wednesday

By Wednesday, it’ll feel more like Spring again with temperatures reaching the mid 60s. Winds will shift towards the south indicating more warm weather to come in the next few days. Overnight, temperatures will fall into the low 40s.

Thursday and Friday

Looking at the 500mb map above, there is a large closed ridge over California, Arizona and Baja California. The trough that brought in the cold air early this week has now weakened and is moving out to the Atlantic. The good news is that the upper air will keep the moisture away for a while. The lower level atmosphere will eventually shift towards the east southeast bringing dewpoints up to the low 50s, however I think this will even out the temperatures. Overall, it’ll be warmer for Thursday and Friday with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s to about 80. Lows will shift from the mid 40s to the low 50s by Friday. That’s a good sign for the weekend, though, which means it’ll be warm but not overbearing!

  1. This will probably change but I’m seeing another dip in the 540-line around the 28th on Tidbits. It sinks all the way to the coast.
