Heat indices this week to be above 100F with minimal rain relief: SW Mississippi – 7/17/22

Temperatures are heating up and rain chances are evaporating. This combination will lend itself to a difficult, miserable pattern in southwest Mississippi over the next several days. Residents should try to find a way to beat the heat because, even though this warmup is not on the same level as the June heatwave, the forecast calls for heat indices near 105F, starting in the middle of this week. Heat advisories could be issued by the National Weather Service in response to these forecasted heat indices.

Today, heat indices will likely reach 100F. By Tuesday, the forecasted heat index will solidly range from 100F-to-105F. The Weather Prediction Center indicates a 40-to-70-percent chance of a heat index greater than 105F on Wednesday which could prompt heat advisories across the area.

Rain will be scarce through the middle of this week as there are only minimal chances of afternoon thunderstorms for southwest Mississippi. As a result, the ground may rapidly dry up and abnormally dry soil conditions may develop in the region as this pattern continues. Additionally, with no evening cooldown expected, community members should try to do outside work in the morning unless it can wait until sunset.

The projected pattern for a week from now indicates that southwest Mississippi is almost guaranteed to see a continuance of above average temperatures. Additionally, through next weekend, the region will possibly see below average precipitation which may lead to drought development, especially as the Texas ridge continues to persist through the month of July.
