Learn about Tornado Forecasting with Rich Thompson from the SPC

Rich Thompson is a fantastic meteorologist with the Storm Prediction Center. I’ve had a chance to chat with him twice. Both times were fantastic. He is a great dude and really humble and down to earth… despite how smart he is.

He put together a handful of classes for the University of Oklahoma where he breaks down severe weather forecasting. They are a fantastic watch for any weather enthusiast or anyone who is just curious about how meteorologists figure out if the weather is going to be severe or not. Or maybe, you’re at home practicing “social distancing” and getting tired of binging you favorite 90s show on Netflix.

No matter the reason, these classes are full of great information presented by a guy who really knows his stuff.

Class 1: Introduction & Basic Concepts

Class 2: Moisture as an ingredient

Class 3: Lift as an ingredient

Class 4: Supercells and Tornadoes

Class 5: Atmospheric setups for potential tornadic weather

Class 6: Different types of severe storms

Class 7: Severe weather climatology

Class 8: Convective schemes & modeling

Class 9: Real-time forecasting
