SPC maintains ‘Moderate Risk’ for severe weather Tuesday: A County-by-County breakdown of the timeline and threats for the Southern MS/AL/LA region

No big changes to the forecast timeline and only minor shifts here and there to the threats. It looks like there will be two chances for storms, pre-frontal convection may develop along a diffuse dryline and then storms along the cold front.

The SPC has continued the Moderate Risk for the area.

During this (and previous) event, people have asked if there is a way to “‘help’ or ‘say thanks’ for all of the forecasting work I do. For the longest time I said, ‘nah! I just like doing this! You know, to help!’ But I was recently convinced that others want to ‘help’ in their own way, too.

And their way of helping, or simply saying ‘thank you’ is with a donation to the blog to help keep it running – or to help keep me running. So I’ve added this link. If you are one of those people, let me say thank you to YOU.

Looking at the model data the ‘two rounds’ of storms are due to two boundaries moving through the region during the day on Tuesday. The first one is the remnant dry line (brown dashed line) and the second is the cold front (blue line).

Underneath that, when looking at the Updraft Helicity Streaks across all of the Convective Allowing Models, the areas where there was the most overlap (generally) were across SW Mississippi, just NW of Jackson, east of Meridian and down toward Hattiesburg.

The Karrie Meter across those same models came in at a 5.51.

How does that compare to past events? I try not to compare events because each event is unique and different and the ingredients are always stacked up differently, not matter how much things ‘feel’ exactly the same.

But here is a tweet from the day before the Easter 2020 outbreak. The Karrie Meter that say was about a 5.5, too.

The Karrie Meter was also in the mid 5s in March of 2021. No big tornadoes. Just hail.

Given that, don’t get too worried about a “repeat” of the Easter 2020 Outbreak.

In fact, looking at the CIPS Analogs, the Top 15 Analogs for this event all occurred before 2012! It has been more than 10 years since a system that looked like this has occurred!

It is also worth noting that six of the Top 15 were “no biggie” events and six of the Top 15 were pretty significant severe weather events. So it is a bit of a boom or bust.
