It’s Snowing in New Jersey!

Hey all! If you didn’t already know, I am from the northeast, up in central NJ. I’ve already measured about 7 inches in my backyard and the snowblower has come out! We’re expecting up to 10 inches when all is set and done.

What if this weekends precipitation was all snow for Southern MS/LA/AL?

Here’s the estimated precipitation totals from this weekend:

Hattiesburg: 1.61 inches

Jackson: 1.54 inches

New Orleans: 1.75 inches

Baton Rouge: 3.03 inches

Let’s say in a hypothetical world where the entire atmospheric column was below freezing during the entirety of this weekend and this precipitation fell as snow, here’s how much would have fallen:

To do this, we have to assume temperatures will be 27-30 degrees at the surface, also not taking into account that the colder air would decrease moisture and therefore decrease the precipitation totals. Given the assumption, all we have to do to get a hypothetical snow total is multiply the amount of rain we saw and multiply by 10, since those temperatures would correlate to a typical 10:1 snow to liquid ratio.

Let’s do that conversion:

Hattiesburg: 1.61 inches x 10 = 16.1 inches of snow

Jackson: 1.54 inches x 10 = 15.4 inches of snow

New Orleans: 1.75 inches x 10 = 17.5 inches of snow

Baton Rouge: 3.03 inches x 10 = 30.3 inches snow

That’s a lot of snow! Would certainly be cool to see!
