We Need A Possum for Groundhog Day because Phil Doesn’t Speak for Us – Week Ahead Forecast for South MS/LA/AL 2/2/26

So ol’ Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and that means 6 weeks more winter. For us here in the south, it’s not going to feel much like winter compared to last week. We’ll have warmer than average temperatures ahead with an incoming front and a large area of high pressure stemming from the northwest US to our neck of the woods. Needless to say, I don’t think the groundhog is a very good meteorologist, just sayin’.

Today

We’re still starting off cold this morning with a low in the low 20s in many areas. Afterwards, we’ll ramp back up into the lower 50s to low 60s which is a nice change from the bitterly cold weekend. Overnight, expect winds to shift towards the south with a low in the mid 30s.

Tomorrow

It’ll be a mostly cloudy day tomorrow with an incoming front rolling in. This front isn’t expected to do much, in fact it’ll weaken as it moves closer to the coastline. A few thunderstorms are expected, however this looks to be a rain event. Highs will be around the upper 50s to upper 60s with winds out of the southwest. The rain will hit in the evening hours and last until the morning hours tomorrow.

Wednesday

The rain will move out by the mid-morning hours on Wednesday and the clouds soon after. Expect a windy day on with the cold front tailing just behind the rain. We can expect cooler temperatures with the north winds, so expect temperatures to fall a bit during the day. Overnight, we’ll fall into the low 30s.

Thursday and Friday

With the outgoing cold front, we can expect a colder day on Thursday with more northerly winds and a trough of lower pressure in the upper atmosphere. This will be fairly brief as Friday will warm up quite a bit compared to Thursday. Highs will be in the upper 40s to low 50s on Thursday with a low in the low 30s. Friday will be warmer with a high in the mid 60s and a low in the upper 30s.

This weekend is looking pretty good, too! It’s going to be slightly warmer than average with highs in the mid 60s, so enjoy it!
