Colder weather settles across high plains Thursday night

Good morning everyone! Things are getting interesting as as the weather models get a better handle on the next system to move through the southern high plains. In fact, the forecast changed drastically in the last 18 hours or so.

As it looks right now, Thursday morning will be mild with temperatures in the 30s and 40s – with some 50s still holding on in some of the southern counties of the Texas panhandle. Though, as the front nears into the afternoon, temperatures will be falling back from the 50s and 60s into the 20s, 30s and 40s.

What we’re looking at right now is a bubble of warm air holding on across the central and southern Texas panhandle through about the 3pm hour. Then the cold air pushes south through the area and temperatures fall back from the 60s into the 30s by the time you head for bed.

Now, the timing for the front is the biggest uncertainty right now. The computer weather models are having a tough time deciphering when the cold air makes its big push south. I’m going to lean with past experience here and hold the front until the afternoon. Based on the trend of the past few years, we haven’t watched a cold front come “full-boar” through the area in the middle of the day very often.

If it does pick up a head of steam and slide through earlier in the day expect colder temperatures for afternoon highs. The take home point here is, don’t dress for the temperatures you are *expecting* based on the morning readings because by the time you leave work, start dinner or make your way out for that hot date – it will be markedly colder.

After Thursday, Friday through next Tuesday look cold and wintry. So take the jackets and coats out and get ready to get your money’s worth out of them!
