Extreme Heat Continues into the Weekend with Possible Afternoon Storms Thursday: Coastal MS/LA/AL Weather Forecast-6/16/22

High temperatures and humidity are not going anywhere as we head towards the weekend as the upper-level high pressure ridge backs to the west in the next several days. This ridge is responsible for the ongoing heat wave that most of the country is experiencing. Many places from the Southeast have seen heat indices into the triple digits. That trend will continue into the near future.

This flow regime is pulling some Saharan dust from the Gulf of Mexico that traveled across the Atlantic from Africa. This dust is contributing to the air quality alert in place for the St. Tammany, Orleans, and St. Bernard Parishes in coastal Louisiana. This adds to the hot and at hazy conditions. For the next several days, high temperatures will stay around the low to mid 90s.

When the ridge moves to the west around Saturday, these temperatures will increase to the upper 90s and even possibly the low 100s. With dewpoints staying pretty steady in the low 70s for the next few days, heat indices are looking to be in the 100F to 110F range for late afternoon into the sunset hours. There is a heat advisory in place for Mobile County on Thursday from 11 am to 7 pm CDT due to these high heat indices. For Friday and Saturday, there exists a high likelihood of a heat advisory being issued for more coast counties and parishes.

Always exercise caution when the heat reaches these extremes by limiting your time outdoors during the afternoon and staying hydrated.

For Thursday, the ridge begins to move westward allowing for any storms that may pop up to move from the northeast to southwest. The chance for storms will be scattered throughout the region as daytime heating kicks in during the late afternoon hours. Plenty of moisture will be in the lower layer of the atmosphere coupled with a fair amount of instability to support convection.
