Mostly dry this week, storms return by Friday: Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast – 5/1/23

It looks like we can expect a calm and quiet afternoon and evening throughout the region, with some mid-level cloudiness due to broad ascent over the area.

We may see some gusty wind, up to 25mph, today with a lingering pressure gradient, but temperatures are expected to stay below normal in the low 70s along and north of Interstate 20 and upper 70s to the south. We can also expect low humidity. RH values may be in the upper 20-percent to low 30-percent range, which may have it feeling more like PHoenix than the Pine Belt. Thankfully, given the recent rain, we don’t have to worry about wildfires.

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, the region will be caught between a closed low pressure system in the eastern half of the US and amplified ridging over the central half of the country, leading to continued northwest flow aloft. Under mostly sunny skies, we can expect highs ranging from the lower 70s to around 80, with lows ranging from the middle 40s to middle 50s.

As we move towards the end of the week and into the weekend, the flow across the region will become more west to west northwest, resulting in increasing moisture, warming temperatures, and a higher chance for showers and storms each day. But for now, it looks like we can enjoy a calm and “cool” start to the week!
