Overnight update on snow forecast for south Mississippi

As of this writing (11:50pm, Monday night) things are starting to pick-up a bit in the weather department as rain changes over to snow in some places across parts of central and northern Mississippi.

To catch up on the details about the forecast, here is my facebook video from earlier:

The New Stuff

As of midnight, rain has changed to a mix with mostly snow north of Greenwood.

The NWS also noted some bright-banding on radar on the ULM radar, suggesting that a chance-over there may be in the works, too.

As you can see from the composite radar still shot, there is some blue starting to sneak onto th map to the north. And temperatures to the north are also now down into the 30s.

The cold air will come barrelling southward through the overnight hours and temperatures will really begin to tumble across South Mississippi after about 3am.

You can look at the live radar here!

The model data continues to show a sharp cut-off between accumulating snow and non-accumulating snow across parts of South Mississippi.

That data shows you could get snow to fall in some places, but it may not accumulate much. The National Weather Service in Jackson will be launching a weather balloon overnight to get a better idea of what the atmosphere looks like top to bottom. That should help with forecasting when, where and how quick the change-over occurs.

Once we start to get that data, we should be able to offer a bit more accuracy and precision to the forecasts.

What is the forecast now?

No real change from earlier.

Up to 3 inches for Lawrence, Simpson, Smith, Jasper and Clarke counties.

Between no accumulation and up to 2 inches for Jeff Davis, Covington, Jones and Wayne, Walthall, MArion, Lamar, Forrest, Perry and Greene counties.

Between no accumulation and up to 1/2 inch of slush in Pearl River, Stone and George counties.
