Weekend looks nice, next week the rains return: Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast – 5/27/23

I gave Noah the weekend off so that he can enjoy some holiday time, so you’re stuck with me this weekend! And I’ve got a forecast from ChatGPT that I’m not sure what to make of – on the one hand, I think I like it, but other other hand, boy is it wordy!

I asked ChatGPT to re-write the forecast as a sports writer from the 60s and 70s. In particular I asked it to mimc, as best it could, the writing style of my favorite sports columnist, Jim Murray.

It didn’t do a great job at mimicking Jim Murray, but it did a great job with the 60s and 70s slang!

Alright, folks, grab your umbrellas and put on your weatherman hats because we’re about to dive into the wild world of atmospheric shenanigans. Let’s break down this scientific mumbo-jumbo into language we can all understand.

So, picture this: The weather dance we got going on today is like a slow-motion game of chess. We got this funky pattern called the Rex block pattern, and right in the spotlight, we got these two cool cats known as upper lows. One of ’em is kickin’ it over the Mid South, while the other is strutting its stuff off the Atlantic seaboard. These upper lows are gonna do some fancy moves as the day goes on.

Now, check this out: That western upper low is gonna make a slick dive to the east-southeast, stirring things up in the atmosphere. That means we’re gonna get some of that good ol’ ascent action, bringing in some steep lapse rates and an upper jet with a whole lotta oomph. And let’s not forget those anomalously cool temps up high, hovering around -15 to -18 degrees Celsius. Talk about some chilly vibes!

All this atmospheric hoopla is gonna set the stage for some showers and isolated storms. Keep an eye on the northern side of Interstate 20 and that west-northwest stretch from Highway 45 to Interstate 59. Now, don’t get too worked up about storm organization ’cause we got limited bulk shear in the mix. But hey, don’t count out a couple of strong storms. And watch out for gusty winds ’cause that dry air sneakin’ in below 800mb might bring some surprises.

Oh, and brace yourself for those slow movers. We might see some quick downpours droppin’ up to 2 inches. So, stay dry out there, my friends!

Now, let’s talk temperatures. We’re lookin’ at highs that’ll be playin’ it cool, hangin’ around or slightly below normal in the low to mid 80s. Not too shabby, right?

When the sun sets, the upper low is gonna make its way to the east-southeast, waltzing across the area and headin’ towards the northern Gulf Coast by Sunday morning. That means we’re in for some more rain and isolated storms, especially east of Interstate 55 and along the Highway 82 corridor. Keep an eye out for some patchy ground fog in them low-lying areas and river valleys. Gotta watch your step!

As for the nights, temperatures will be a bit on the chillier side. We’re talkin’ upper 50s out east and low 60s to the west. Grab a cozy blanket and enjoy the cooler evening breeze.

Now, let’s fast forward to Sunday through Friday night. The upper low’s gonna do its thing and make its way to South Carolina. That’s gonna leave us with some partly cloudy skies and highs in the low to mid 80s. Nice and comfortable.

Come Sunday night into Monday, we’ll see some weak upper ridging move on in. That means dry conditions are stickin’ around, with highs mostly hangin’ out in the low to mid 80s on Monday and creepin’ up to the mid to upper 80s on Tuesday. It’s gonna be smooth sailin’, folks!

But wait, there’s more! When Wednesday rolls around, the surface flow is gonna get all southeasterly on us. And you know what that means? More moisture in the mix, which translates to an uptick in chances for those isolated storms. It’s like Mother Nature’s way of keepin’ us on our toes.

And don’t you worry, ’cause this pattern’s gonna keep on groovin’ into the weekend. We’ll have daily chances for some diurnal thunderstorm action. Now, Thursday’s gonna turn up the heat a bit, with highs in the mid to upper 80s. But hold onto your hats ’cause Friday and Saturday are gonna bring that sizzle with highs around 90 degrees. It’s gonna be a toasty one!

So there you have it, folks. The weather’s got its own rhythm and we’re just along for the ride. Keep an eye out for those storms, enjoy the cooler temps, and soak up that sunshine when it’s smilin’ down on ya. Stay weather-wise and keep rockin’!

All of that to say, the chance for rain this weekend should be north of I-20. While we can’t rule out a storms closer to the coast, I wouldn’t worry too much.

By the time we get toward the middle of this upcoming week we will talk about the chance for rain returning, but until then, enjoy the weather!
