Well, we made it to June.
The big story for the next 36 hours or so is the heat and the storm threat. A loosely organized cluster of thunderstorms is currently marching southeast across northern Alabama. These storms will pose a risk for damaging straight line winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect till 7pm to cover this threat.
Another cluster of thunderstorms may form to the west of these on a trailing outflow boundary this evening. These storms will cause similar hazards as the ones further east.
For the areas that are not impacted by storms, it will be very hot and humid. Heat index values may reach over 105. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids and take breaks in air conditioning.
For right now, the southern United States is under a ridge of higher heights at the jet stream level. By Wednesday, the Jet stream will dip down over Alabama and Georgia. This will push a back door cold front through Georgia and Alabama.
Temperatures will fall to below seasonal Values (highs around 80) with dew points dropping below 60 for the first time in a while. All in all, the weather will feel pleasant finally.
Airport Forecasts
Houston (KIAH/KHOU)- Flights this evening through early afternoon will be fine. Thunderstorms are likely in the late afternoon and early evening hours. This may cause some delays for microbursts and lightning.
Shreveport (KSHV)- Clear tonight and tomorrow morning. Widespread thunderstorms forming by late afternoon. There may be a delay for downbursts or lightning.
Baton Rouge (KBTR)- Chance of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. More widespread storms tomorrow afternoon and evening. There may be periodic delays for lightning and wind.
New Orleans (KMSY)- Scattered thunderstorms throughout the next 36 hours. Most flights will be fine but there will probably be some delays for lightning and microbursts
Jackson (KJAN)- Some flights may be impacted by a line of late evening thunderstorms. Lightning and wind may cause delays. Thunderstorms will likely redevelop by afternoon and may cause more delays.
Mobile (KMOB)- Thunderstorms dying out by evening. Most morning flights will be fine. There is a chance of storms tomorrow afternoon that may cause some delays for lightning and downdrafts.
Birmingham (KBMH)- Thunderstorms likely this afternoon and evening that may be severe. Expect delays for lightning and wind. There is a lower threat for storms tomorrow afternoon.
Tallahassee (KTLH)- Flights this evening through midday tomorrow will be fine. Storms will likely form in the mid afternoon and may cause delays for lightning and microbursts.
Atlanta (KATL)- Isolated thunderstorms dying out by evening. Scattered storms possible tomorrow afternoon which cause delays for lightning and wind.
Highways
I-10
Showers and storms diminishing after sunset. Calm morning. Thunderstorms will redevelop by late afternoon in Louisiana. This will bring a threat for heavy rain and ponding so make sure to take it slow.
I-20
Thunderstorms likely in Mississippi this evening. Strong winds and heavy may lead to slow going. There is a slight chance for a spot shower or two tomorrow afternoon but most areas will be dry.
I-49
Tonight and tomorrow morning will be fine. A line of storms will likely drop south across Louisiana tomorrow afternoon. Be mindful of hydroplainning.
I-55 and I-59
A chance of storms tonight. Heavy rain and strong winds will be possible. Tomorrow should be mostly clear.
I-65
After the mcs moves through this afternoon, it should be mostly clear. There is a slight chance of an isolated storm tomorrow but most areas will be dry.
I-75
Clear tonight and tomorrow morning. Thunderstorms likely over south Georgia tomorrow after with the usual hazards (lightning, wind, heavy rain).
