As I’m writing this at around 1:15p CDT, temperatures are already in the lower 90s across our region. These temperatures will continue to rise as the day goes on, eventually reaching the upper 90s in some spots. It’s especially important to wear cool clothes, drink plenty of water, and apply sun protection today!

This afternoon and this evening, we’re expecting a few weak and scattered thunderstorms in Alabama, more specifically between Huntsville and Montgomery. These storms will minor, so there isn’t any risk of flooding or weather impacts that are severe. At most, you can expect a brief period of heavy rain, gusty winds, and some lightning.

But considering the temperatures and humidity, why aren’t more thunderstorms likely? Well, the biggest culprit is the wind direction at the 850 mb pressure level. Since we’re in the center of a ridge of high pressure today, the wind will be coming out of the north, which is unlike most days with severe thunderstorms. Much of the air entering our region at the 850 mb pressure level today is air that’s been dried out by the land, or drier air from our southwest.
Tomorrow

Moving into tomorrow, we’re once again in for a hot day. Afternoon high temperatures are forecasted to reach the upper 90s in some spots, with morning lows only dropping into the upper 70s. Much like today, be sure to take appropriate measures to stay cool and prevent sunburns.

We’re expected to receive more robust storms tomorrow compared to today, with southward moving air caused by the ridge interacting with an area of low pressure off the west coast of Florida (tropical storm?). The storms tomorrow will generally be in the same area as today, throughout Alabama as well as in the Florida panhandle and southern Georgia.
