Summertime Ridging Means Bigtime Heat: Regional Forecast – 7/7/2026

It wouldn’t be July without some heat and humidity.

This moisture has allowed for several areas of convection to develop. Thankfully, these storms will be dying off as the nocturnal inversion builds in.

Tomorrow will be another hot one. Heat indexes may easily top 100 across the region. Definitely a day to stay in the AC or the pool. Unfortunately, it does look like some of us might see some storms.

CAPE (storm fuel) will be very high. This will lead to robust updrafts capable of very heavy rain, frequent lightning, and maybe some damaging downbursts. So why are we not concerned about widespread severe storms? The answer goes back to the title…

Well mostly. There is technically a very weak shortwave trough over the region. Overall however, ridging is dominating the Southern United States. This means very weak vertical wind shear over the region. All in all, they’ll be some scattered pulse storms but no huge supercells.

Airport Forecasts

Houston (KIAH/KHOU)- Most flights should be fine. Any storms in the area will die off by late evening with the loss of daytime heating. Tomorrow there is a chance of some afternoon thunderstorms that may cause a brief lightning or microburst delay but it nothing too impactful.

Shreveport (KSHV)- Scattered storms are possible through tomorrow evening. These may be capable of frequent lightning and strong downburst which may mean a few delays. No delay should be super long but there may be a couple.

Baton Rouge (KBTR)- Thunderstorms should die off after sunset. Flights tomorrow morning should be fine but thunderstorm chances ramp up during the dinner hour posing a risk for lightning and downdraft delays.

New Orleans (KMSY)- Storms in the area will dissipate soon after sunset. Tomorrow morning and mid day will be clear but there may be some storms from late afternoon through mid evening potentially causing a risk for some lightning and microburst delays.

Jackson (KJAN)- Most flights should be ok. There may be some isolated thunderstorms from late afternoon into the dinner hour posing a risk for short lightning and downburst delays.

Mobile (KMOB)- Any remaining storms should dissipate after sunset. Most flights will be fine (especially during the morning) but there is a chance for some storms during the afternoon and early evening which may cause some lightning or microburst delays.

Birmingham (KBMH)- Storms will clear out after sunset. Tomorrow morning will be dry before thunderstorms build during the afternoon and evening posing a risk for some lightning or downdraft delays.

Tallahassee (KTLH)- Storms should die out after sunset. There will probably be at least or two in the area tomorrow afternoon posing a risk for a quick lightning or downburst delay but the morning and late evening should be clear.

Atlanta (KATL)- The driest one. Any remaining storms should quickly clear after sunset. Tomorrow will most likely be sunny and dry but cannot rule a very isolated storm posing a risk for a brief lightning or microburst delay.

Highways

I-10 – No issues tonight. There will likely be few storms over southern Louisiana and parts of western Florida tomorrow posing a risk for ponding on the roads. Most areas should be dry however.

I-20 – Can’t rule out a few storms from central Alabama into Louisiana tomorrow. Most of the route will be dry but for the places that do get storms it will likely be very heavy rain.

I-49 – There will probably a few storms across western Louisiana tomorrow during the late afternoon. Make sure to take it slow when encountering heavy rain.

I-55 and I-59 – A few isolated storms possible across Mississippi tomorrow. Though most areas will be clear, the areas that do get wet will get a soaking downpour so keep an eye on the sky.

I-65 – The vast majority of the road will be dry but can’t rule out a storm or two across Alabama.

I-75 – Mainly fine. A very isolated shower or storm might form over southern Georgia but nothing major.
