Summertime thunderstorms from the Carolinas to East Texas: Southeast Weather Forecast – 8/11/22

The Southeast will experience around average temperatures for this time of year with highs ranging from the upper 80s to mid 90s. General afternoon/evening showers and thunderstorms will be common across the region, including parts of eastern Texas where the rain is very much needed.

An amplified ridge over the U.S. is allowing lower pressure/troughing to push southward over the Northeast and will allow drier air to reach as far south as the Carolinas to potentially Louisiana late this weekend; however, the region will primarily be influenced by the two areas of high pressure creating weak winds at the 500mb level for the next 3 days. This will keep weather across the Southeast relatively quiet with the exception of diurnal thunderstorms.

A streak of higher rainfall totals from eastern Texas to southern Georgia can be expected into this weekend with amounts ranging from 1″-2″ which has warranted a marginal risk for flooding from the WPC both Friday and Saturday. Most of this rain will come from the diurnal thunderstorms (storms that are driven by the heating of the sun) and could produce heavy downpours and gusty winds, but overall most of these storms should pass quickly.

This extra rainfall in Louisiana and East Texas is a good sight to see, especially for Eastern Texas where severe and extreme drought conditions have persisted for the past several months. It will take more than a few days of rainfall to remove the drought, but a small amount of rain can still go a long way and this will be very beneficial for the region.
