Tropical Forecast for 5/27/2026

Good news for a change: No tropical systems expected.

This is common for this time of year. Hurricane season has not technically started yet (June 1) but it is good to see that there does not appear to be anything brewing.

Sea surface temperatures in the gulf are not really supportive of tropical cyclone development yet, (again, not uncommon for this time of year) partially due to all the rain and clouds that have been happening down there.

Additionally, the subtropical jet is still hanging around the area. This will provide enough shear to keep conditions unfavorable for tropical cyclone development in our area.

I know some of you may have seen an image from a weather model of a hurricane hitting Florida in the coming days. This is highly unlikely due to the reasons outlined above. That model (the GFS) has a known flaw that causes it to consistently overdue hurricane strength and frequency in the extended range. Therefore, try to refrain from paying attention to images of scary looking storms circulating the internet that are just trying to cause panic and confusion.
