Unfortunately, outdoor plans won’t be a go for Memorial Day. Rain and Thunderstorms will continue throughout the Southern region and all weekend long. Boooo! Make sure you have a raincoat and umbrella for the next few days!
Today
Going to be a hot and muggy day here in the South, with humidity in most of the South in the mid to upper 90%. Areas have highs in the mid to upper 80s. Our chances of rain will increase throughout the day into the nighttime hours.
As this is being written, we have a line of thunderstorms moving northeast across parts of the Southern region. These storms have been producing heavy rain and lots of lightning. Southern LA is taking the hit most of the day until late evening, early nighttime hours, before the storms continue northward. Flash flooding in this area is possible. Southeast MS will dry up just after 6 pm CDT before the rain shows back up. South AL will see some isolated thunderstorms during the late evening into the nighttime hours, going northwest.
The SPC has most of our Southern region under a level 1/5 marginal risk, with Central MS and Northwest LA under a level 2/5 slight risk. What does this mean for us? Well, this scale means the risk of seeing severe thunderstorms produce damaging winds, hail, or possible tornadoes in the area. 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest risk.
Tomorrow
The temperatures won’t be as hot as they were on Saturday, but it will still be humid. As we progress through the day, our chances of rain will increase.
Seeing a boundary of warm, humid air colliding with the drier air toward Central LA and Southern MS around the morning hours. This could mean a possibility of storms forming around this line. In the graphic below, we see that the area near the boundary has a higher chance of rain and storms.
Memorial Day
We will be seeing highs around the lower 80s, but don’t let this fool you. Our humidity will be above 80%, even in the 90% during the afternoon hours.
All weekend long, we will just be getting rain and scattered thunderstorms. Areas in Southern MS and AL might be seeing almost 3 inches of rain by the end of Memorial Day.
Extended Forecast
Looks like over the next two weeks or so, the CPC is forecasting our temperatures could feel cooler than normal, while the precipitation remains above normal.
