Chilly start today, rain returns Thursday: Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast – 2/1/23

You are probably waking up to some markedly cooler temperatures this morning. It is about 15 degrees cooler this morning than it was yesterday morning in many locations.

The good news is that the fog is gone.

As we head through the next few days, it looks like the next best bet for rain arrives on Thursday and through Thursday night. So far the threat for severe weather looks very, very low. I suppose you can’t rule it out, but if it happens… and it happens to you, buy a lottery ticket the second the storm passes.

Rainfall totals should end up being between 1″ and 3″ in total, with most folks between 1″ and 2″ of rain. So this isn’t going to be a very significant rain event. So, short of having an outdoor wedding or a bounce house for a kids birthday on Thursday afternoon, you should end up being just fine. Just get ready to use the windshield wipers.

There is a chance a few folks north of HWY98 may get treated to a few sleet pellets mixing in with some of the lingering showers on Friday morning. Looking at the sounding data, there may be just enough ‘umph’ left in the lower levels with a wet bulb near the freezing mark betwen about 1500ft and 5000ft that we might be able to freeze out a few ice pellets.

In fact, I’d go as far to say that the chance that someone sees sleet mixing in with the rain is higher than the chance that someone sees a severe storm.

Then we dry things out for the weekend and into next week. The next chance for rain arrives next Tuesday.
