Discussing the Severe Threat for Sunday and the Rest of the Week

The Storm Prediction Center has the majority of the Deep South under a Slight (2 out of 5) risk for severe weather on Sunday. A low pressure system from the surface will be moving through the Southwest and tagging along with the low in the Great lakes to bring us some rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

So far our main threat is hail and wind. If you look at the graph to the left on the Skew-T above, you may notice a gap between the red and green lines between the 700mb and 500mb mark. Other models are showing a slightly larger gap, but the point is that the dry slot combined with the amount of instability means that hail is possible with the line of storms moving in on Sunday evening. Straightline winds may also be a factor, however the front looks to be lagging behind that the threat of straightline winds looks limited to the North of us. Overall, expect rain and thunderstorms from the afternoon into the nighttime with possible hail.

Next Week

After the cold front moves in overnight into Monday, we’ll see much cooler temperatures than the past few weeks have been. An average of 60’s and 70’s for our highs until the next front moves in around Friday. Overall, a fairly pleasant but windy week.
