Wintry mix looking less likely, but not impossible followed by calmer weather: Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast – 1/20/22

The good news is that model guidance continues to trend away from the potential for freezing rain and sleet. It looks like the drier air is going to mostly win. But, not totally. So, sadly, I can’t call for a totally dry night tonight.

So do know, there may be some issues as you get up and moving tomorrow morning. But those issues will be pretty localized.

I can’t speak for school superintendents nor county emergency management officials, so I don’t know if schools will be delayed. But, I can say, that widespread weather problems won’t be the cause.

But there is still the chance a few spots see some ice crystal flurries or sprinkles.

Looking at the forecast data (above) I’ve zoomed in on the piece that matters. There will be forcing and moisture in the Dendritic Growth Zone (top circle and arrows), so we will be making snowflakes! But the warmer air between the ground and the DGZ (lower circle and arrows) mean the flakes will melt or evaporate before reaching the ground.

But the temperatures will be below-freezing between the ground and about 3,000ft up, meaning any droplets that don’t evaporate will likely refreeze. Meaning sleet/ice crystals are the most likely precipitation type to hit the ground.

The chance for any precip will be pretty short, though. As by 6a the atmosphere will be bone dry aside from the thin layer of cloud cover above our heads.

Notice the temperature, though, at 31 degrees. That means below-freezing. So if you have any plants that don’t like the cold, might want to bring them in!

Beyond that point, the weather calms down through the weekend.
